LinkedIn'i açtığınızda kaçınılmaz olarak şu soruyla karşılaşıyorsunuz: "Hâlâ Excel'le mi çalışıyorsunuz?" Bazen bir soru olarak, bazen hafifçe alay içerecek şekilde. Arkasındaki mesaj açık: Excel kullanmak geri kalmışlık, modern sistemler kullanmak ilerilik.

Bu mesajın tehlikeli bir varsayım içerdiğini düşünüyorum.

Excel bir araç, sorun değil

Excel'in gerçek bir sorunu var: ölçeklenmiyor, hata yapmaya açık, paylaşım zorlu. Bunlar gerçek. Ama Excel kullanan bir fabrika, Excel kullandığı için değil, Excel'in çözmeye çalıştığı asıl sorun çözülmediği için sorunlu olabilir.

Şunu sık sık görüyorum: Fabrika Excel'i bırakıp bir yazılım satın alıyor. Altı ay sonra aynı veriler artık o yazılıma manuel giriliyor. Araç değişti, süreç değişmedi.

"Excel'den kurtulma" neden yanlış hedef?

Çünkü araç hedef olamaz. Asıl soru şu: Bu veriyle ne kararı daha iyi alacaksınız?

Üretim miktarını Excel'e yazan bir fabrika bunu neden yapıyor? Muhtemelen stok takibi için ya da vardiya raporu için. O stok takibinin ya da vardiya raporunun işi ne? Bir karara girdi sağlamak. O karar ne? Belki malzeme siparişi, belki üretim planı.

Eğer o zinciri takip ederseniz, çözmeniz gereken gerçek sorunun ne olduğunu görürsünüz. Ve o sorun bazen Excel'den çıkmayı gerektiriyor, bazen gerektirmiyor.

Daha tehlikeli bir senaryo

Hazırlık seviyesi düşük bir fabrika "Excel'den kurtulayım" motivasyonuyla karmaşık bir sistem satın alıyor. Veri kalitesi düşük, süreçler tanımsız, kullanıcılar eğitimsiz. Sistem 6 ay sonra yarım kalıyor. Ve fabrika hem parayı harcadı hem de Excel'e geri döndü — ama bu sefer daha kötü hissederek.

Excel bazen en dürüst araçtır. Çünkü sizi kendinizi kandırmaz — veri kalitesiz ise bunu görürsünüz. Bazı yazılımlar ise kötü veriyi güzel grafiklerle gizler.

Doğru soru ne?

"Hâlâ Excel mi kullanıyorsunuz?" değil, şunu sorun: "Şu an hangi kararları veriyle, hangilerini sezgiyle alıyorsunuz?"

Bu sorunun cevabı sizi doğru hedefe götürür. Ve o hedef bazen Excel'den çıkmayı, bazen sadece Excel'i daha iyi kullanmayı, bazen de tamamen farklı bir şeyi gerektirir.

Open LinkedIn and you'll inevitably encounter: "Still using Excel?" Sometimes as a question, sometimes with a hint of mockery. The message is clear: using Excel is backward, using modern systems is progressive. I think this message contains a dangerous assumption.

Excel is a tool, not a problem

Excel has real issues: it doesn't scale, it's error-prone, sharing is difficult. Those are real. But a factory using Excel may have problems not because it uses Excel, but because the underlying problem Excel is trying to solve hasn't been solved.

I frequently see: a factory drops Excel and buys software. Six months later, the same data is being manually entered into that software. The tool changed, the process didn't.

Why "getting rid of Excel" is the wrong goal

Because a tool can't be a goal. The real question is: What decision will you make better with this data?

Follow the chain — why is a factory entering production quantities into Excel? Probably for inventory tracking or shift reporting. What does that serve? Feeding a decision. What decision? Maybe material ordering, maybe production planning. Follow that chain and you'll see the real problem to solve.

A more dangerous scenario

A factory with low readiness buys a complex system motivated by "getting off Excel." Data quality is low, processes are undefined, users are untrained. The system stalls after 6 months. The factory spent money and returned to Excel — this time feeling worse about it.

Excel is sometimes the most honest tool. It doesn't let you deceive yourself — if data quality is poor, you see it. Some software hides bad data behind beautiful charts.

What's the right question?

Not "Still using Excel?" but: "Which decisions are you making with data, and which with intuition?"

That answer points you to the right goal. And that goal sometimes requires leaving Excel, sometimes just using it better, and sometimes something entirely different.
